“The conference “Building Views on the Legacy of Alvar Aalto” brought Juhani Pallasmaa, Professor emeritus at the Helsinki University of Technology (currently Aalto University) and prolific Finnish architect and theoretician, to the Porto School of Architecture on the 4th October 2018, to discuss Aalto’s work, his relationship with industry and the haptic architecture of the Villa Mairea. This book presents the text “Alvar Aalto’s Synthetic Rationality – Experiential Logic of Form and Image”, reproducing and further expanding Juhani Pallasmaa’s lecture, and complements it with a visual essay, which is edited allowing both a simultaneous and an autonomous reading of the text and the images. To broaden the topics of discussion, the essay “A view on Architecture”, by Pedro Borges de Araújo, architect, professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto, introduces a continuity between Aalto and Pallasmaa and explores the many encounters and links in their work, and the engagement of each with technology throughout their careers.”
